What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxation when your heart rate and breathing slow down.  We all go through stages of hypnosis many times a day – just before we go to sleep and wake up, when we are engrossed in a TV programme or book, or when we’ve driven home and arrive without remembering how we got there.  The side effects of hypnosis are all good – you’ll feel relaxed, calm and comfortable - like having a massage without being touched.

Hypnosis is completely safe and you don’t have to worry about being controlled and made to do things against your will.  When you are in hypnosis you are not asleep – in fact you are in complete control, with a heightened sense of awareness, noticing every little thing that is going on around you.

When you are in this relaxed, hypnotic state you become more receptive to suggestion.  It is at this stage that a hypnotherapist can help you to retrain your subconscious mind to accept and learn new behaviours.
